Cruising is Fun!

I’ve traveled all over the world so when I first considered taking a cruise, I didn’t expect all that much. After all, I’d seen it all so what could cruising offer that my other travels lacked?

Boy was I surprised! By the second day of my first Caribbean cruise I was hooked! Imagine being able to travel the world in luxury and being able to take your room with you! On board there were so many things to do! Cruising is the only way to travel!

Today’s cruise ships cater to everyone’s interests. If you are one of those hardy souls who love to party – you’ll find a constant party going on up around the pool. There you will find a perpetually manned bar and roving waiters selling fancy tropical drinks (the kind that come with those cute little paper umbrellas).

There you’ll find an activity director whose job is keeping you amused wandering the area. When one activity ends, the start of another is probably less than an hour or two away. It’s non-stop booze, games and fun – if that’s your thing.

But if you’re like me and are more interested in relaxation than frantic games, you’ll also find everything you need onboard. You can wander through the shopping mall, test your luck in the casino, have a drink at a number of different bars or sit out on the deck in one of those comfortable chaise lounger chairs - and watch the sea slip by.

In short, modern cruise ships cater to everyone’s desires. There are exercise facilities, luxurious spas, hair dressers, and interesting lectures.

This brings me to the subject of entertainment. If you enjoy watching a group of young dancers jump around a stage singing Broadway tunes – you’ll love cruise ship stage shows. Personally I can’t imagine a more boring evening. We steer clear of most of these shows preferring to restrict our viewing to other more promising entertainments.

We usually enjoy the comedians, the pianists, the Motown groups (some are "tribute" groups) and Marty Allen the short little pot-bellied comedian from the Ed Sullivan show. He does his old 60s comedy routine on various cruise ships. Though the jokes are old, the presentation is great and he never fails to earn an enthusiastic standing ovation. We’ve caught his act on two different cruises and were delighted both times.

Cruise Tip: When you spot a show you want to attend, be sure to get a seat at least a half hour before show time or you’ll end up standing in the isle or sitting in a seat behind a pillar. I’m always amazed to see so many people wandering in moments before curtain time expecting to find good seats.
